The San Diego-Yantai Friendship Society, established in on July 15,1985fosters the educational, cultural, business and governmental relationships between the City of San Diego and the municipality of Yantai, Shandong Province, in the People¡¯s Republic of China.
The organization promotes friendship and understanding between the cities by assisting in special projects, cultural and student exchanges as well as hosting delegations to and from Yantai. It also serves the local community and its members by hosting conferences, lectures, film and panel discussions about Yantai.
In 1991, the San Diego Rose Society and the people of San Diego presented Yantai with a gift of 2,000 rose bushes and nine ¡°Yantai¡± miniature roses (hybridized by Tiny Petals Nursery in Chula Vista). A San Diego delegation (including members of the San Diego Rose Society) visited Yantai for the formal dedication of the San Diego-Yantai Friendship Rose Garden located in Nan Shan Park, Yantai¡¯s largest municipal park. Yantai celebrated the event with a video about the project and a book published in China about the garden and the varieties of roses. The San-Diego-Yantai Friendship Rose Garden welcomes thousands of visitors each year and serves to strengthen the relationship between San Diego and Yantai.
The San Diego-Yantai Friendship Society is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization officially endorsed by the City of San Diego. A volunteer Board of Directors governs San Diego-Yantai Friendship Society.
